Abstract

We present recent work on optimization and failure modelling of ribbed cross-laminated timber (CLT) plates. A procedure for economic design of such plates is described. It can be used for computation of an optimized geometric configuration, i.e. dimensions and spacing of the ribs and the thickness of layers. The optimized configuration complies with the design code or technical approval requirements with respect to the allowed displacements, stresses, fundamental eigenfrequency and residual plate stiffness in the case of fire. In order to estimate the limit load, limit ductility and failure mechanism of a ribbed CLT plate, a numerical model for a complete failure analysis is considered. The studied model is based on the Hashin failure criteria. The material softening is described by a smeared crack approach. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate both the optimization procedure and numerical model for the failure analysis of ribbed CLT plates.
