Abstract

In this paper we develop a model to characterize the deterioration of the nominal macroscopic mechanical response of solid materials containing microheterogeneities due to progressive microstructural failure with increased loading. In the approach, the effects of local microscopic failure are described by a variational boundary value problem with constraints on the microfields. In order to satisfy the constraints, the eigenvalues of the elasticity tensor at points throughout the heterogeneous body are reduced. Theoretical properties of the model are determined and a computational algorithm is developed to evaluate the deterioration of the microstructure. Numerical simulations, involving the finite element method to compute the degrading response of particulate reinforced materials are presented to illustrate various aspects of the model.
